Rhythm Perception, 2024

Generative Data Visualization

Project image 1

Rhythm Perception explores the process of discovering possibilities through the resonance between consciousness and unconsciousness, conveying the idea that “Can Be Anything.”

In our lives, signal (meaningful data) and noise (natural, meaningless data) coexist, and we continuously navigate through noise to identify the signal. In this work, consciousness is represented through visuals and unconsciousness through sound, each containing both signal and noise. When the signal of consciousness and the signal of unconsciousness meet, leaving only the essential signal. This moment represents possibility and hope.

This project is an interactive system that explores the relationship between consciousness and unconsciousness. I used TouchDesigner for the visuals (representing consciousness) and Purr Data for the sound (representing unconsciousness).
[ The Data: Signal vs. Noise ]
Both the visuals and sound process two types of data at the same time:
Signal: My personal sleep data, which I organized into stages (1–5) and durations.
Noise: Random motion tracking data I extracted from videos of natural elements like water, clouds, and lava.
[ How it Works ]
The visuals in TouchDesigner and the sound in Purr Data run independently at different speeds. The system is designed to look for moments when the "Signal" (sleep data) values in both parts match.
[ The Resonance ]
When these values align, a state of "resonance" occurs. At this exact moment, the random noise fades out, leaving only the synchronized signal. This shifts the experience from a state of disorder to perfect harmony between what you see and what you hear.
